Abstract: On June 19, 2018, the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression issued a report regarding Liberia’s protections of the right to freedom of opinion and expression. The aim of the visit and subsequent report was “to assess the situation as regards the right to freedom of expression in [Liberia], in particular the issues of press freedom, media independence and diversity, and access to information.” The report discussed the background of Liberia’s freedom of opinion and expression, Liberia’s international legal obligations, Liberia’s domestic legal framework, proposed “modifications of speech law consistent with international standards”, steps Liberia can take to promote a free and independent media, how Liberia can ensure freedom of information, and concluded with a list of recommendations.
